It is recommended for
intermediate to advanced walkers (yet if executed with less enthusiasm it can be comfortable for a beginner as well!)
“Pendulum-Push“ method in 5 easy steps
Start with your arms extended out in front of you at aprox. 45 degrees - your arms should be straight (but not locked)
The poles are to be slanted back at aprox. 45 degree angle from your hand-grips to the ground
Extend your lead arm out - swing it like a 'PENDULUM' (pivoting forward from your shoulder) planting the pole firmly on the ground
Then 'PUSH' down & through the 'PENDULUM' swing motion, propelling yourself forward as your opposite arm swings forward (continue & repeat this sequence)
Your legs are to reach out in a 'heel - toe' motion opposite & in rhythm with your arms. Remember walking with your legs & arms opposite each other is a very natural motion - though at first it may seem awkward - try not to think too much!
(View the video demonstration & re-read these instructions)
Note: It is best to start this 'PENDULUM - PUSH' method with a short stride, a shallow 'PENDULUM' swing & a light 'PUSH' off, until you grow more comfortable with the whole motion. Then as your comfort increases - lengthen your stride, extend the reach of your 'PENDULUM' swing & increase the intensity of your 'PUSH' off........listen to your body & you will know what feels right. Walking with poles should feel quite natural once you 'get a rhythm going' - correctly executed intensity makes a successful 'Fitness Walk' - rather than speed!
