"I recently found out that I am a Type 2 diabetic. I had put on a lot of weight and had not excercised properly for many years. My doctor told me that the main way to control my condition was through exercise and then diet. The other part of this story is that my friend had knee surgery in the Fall and needed to exercise as well. She heard of a Nordic (pole) Walking group that was going to start training for the Vancouver Sun Run in Jan/07. So, the two of us joined the group and we trained three times a week for four months. We went to the Vancouver Sun Run in April and walked the 10K in 1 hour and 47 min. (This was also the first year that the Sun Run let in pole walkers, so we were pioneers.) We are both in really good physical shape now, and we owe it to Sport Med BC for getting us involved in a wonderful program. We are both continuing to walk 3 times a week and are looking forward to participating in the Vancouver Sun Run next year as Nordic Walker leaders. So, how's that for a good story!!"
